{february: week two}

Some Preschool Tidbits from this week:

Color of the Month: Pink
Shape of the Month:  Heart

We ended our week with pink heart tissue paper art.  It was a little tricky, but my students did such a good job.  The hardest part was twisting the tissue paper on the pencil.

Number of the Week: 9

We practiced writing the numeral 9, counted 9 objects repeatedly and identified the number 9 among other letters.

Letter of the Week: S

Handwriting Practice: S

Getting to Know the letter S

S Flashcards from KizClub.com

All Packed {Beginning Sound /s/}
This idea was taken from the Education Center's Circle Time from A to Z. {We had a set of picture cards.  Each student received 2 cards.  When it was her turn, she decided if it began with the /s/ sound.  if it did, she placed it on the suitcase.  If not, the card was placed outside the suitcase.}

Tongue Twister Fun {Beginning Sound /s/}
This idea was taken from the Education Center's Circle Time from A to Z. {We practiced the beginning sound /s/ while we tried to say the following tongue twisters. They were too long for us to memorize in preschool, but we laughed as emphasized our /s/ sounds.}

Time to Wash {Letter-Sound Association}
This idea was taken from the Education Center's Circle Time from A to Z. {Each student received a bar of "soap" and if Ms. Carlie said a word that began with the /s/ sound we sang "We're scrubbing with soap" as we washed our bodies.  If the word did not began with the /s/ sound, we held still.}

Letter S Soup {Letter Sound Association}
This idea was taken from the Education Center's Circle Time from A to Z. {Every student received 2-3 letter Ss.  We followed the same idea as "Time to Wash" above: Ms. Carlie read words aloud and if it started with the /s/ sound, we could put the noodle" in the bowl.}

Sorry, it's blurry.

Silly Sally {Letter Recognition}
This idea was taken from the Education Center's Circle Time from A to Z. {We modified this game a little, and my students loved it.  I held a card up in the air.  If the card was an S, they let me know & then I called out any of the following, depending if they were standing or sitting:
  • "Silly Sally says sit."
  • "Silly Sally says stand."
  •  "Silly Sally says spin slowly."
  •  "Silly Sally says stop." }

Super Sand Castle {Letter Identification}
This idea was taken from the Education Center's Circle Time from A to Z. {We passed around a pail full of "sand" and each student took one piece out on her turn.  If the "sand" was labeled with the letter S, we used it to build our sand castle.  If it was not labeled with an S, we set it aside.}

Sizzling Sun Rays {Letter Identification}
This idea was taken from the Education Center's Circle Time from A to Z. {Our sun was in the middle and all of our rays were spread around, turned upside down.  As each child took her turn, she determined if it was labeled with the letter s or not.  If it was, the ray was added to the sun.  If not, it was set aside.  I added a couple of extra rays to the master since we were short when we built our sun.}

Sorting Socks {Uppercase & Lowercase Letters}
This idea was taken from the Education Center's Circle Time from A to Z. {Students categorized the socks into an uppercase basket and a lowercase basket.}

Nursery Rhyme: The Queen of Hearts
We ran out of time, so this coloring page became homework.  We recited the rhyme once and talked a little about the Queen of Hearts.

High Frequency Word: and

Word Family of the Week: -ill

Number Sense: 1:1 Correspondence
Crown & Jewel Grid Game

Words Their Way:
We reviewed syllables using this poem we have seen before.

Sort 11b: More compound words - we combined our word cards from last week to make a larger set this week.
